We lit up the world

Context check.
http://www.americaslibrary.gov/jb/gilded/jb_gilded_edison_1.html

Electricity was "high tech" less than 135 years ago.
We lit up the world.
We built communications technologies.
We changed the human relationship to each other.
We changed the human relationship to our universe.
So - there is no such thing as "this is how we have always done things"
Because this is all new territory for the human experience.
There is no box. There has never been one.

"Humans: For first we use machines, then we wear machines, then we become machines.
Machines: First we serve humans, then we augment humans, then we are humans."
We march together towards Human 2.0

Becoming Grounded

Being Grounded Visonaries
Of course you feel disconnected. You are.
Of course you don’t know where you are going, you don’t.
Of course you’ve lost your vision, you no longer see.
Here are three simple fixes.

BEING DISCONNECTED
Your brain is a remarkable device. It is a biological computer,
millions of years in the making. There are over 10
billion cells in your brain, with trillions of interconnected
synapses. The entire machine of your mind weighs on
average, about three pounds. It is a controlled explosion
of chemicals and electrical activity that result in YOU.

Many generations ago we looked at the sky (more about
this in “Being Blind”) and we made the decision that we
had to understand what we saw. During our trip down
the long road of civilization, we began to wrap ourselves
in creature comforts, as is natural, and is our want to do.
One of the comforts that we now take for granted, however,
literally disconnected us from the earth. Some of
us are disconnected the large majority of our lives. And
we wonder why we begin to feel insane. Here’s what we
did: we wrapped our feet in insulating materials - shoes,
and never took them off. It’s time to be reconnect to the
planet and hence, the universe. Take your shoes off. Take
your socks off. Once a day, walk in the grass, the sand,
the snow. Once a day for just a few minutes, refl ect on
your connectedness to the whole. Your brain longs for
the serenity of being. Allow your brain to get grounded.
Get re-grounded.

BEING LOST
Some believe that the human race as we know it today
has existed for over 150,000 years. Think about this for
a moment. That means that if you are wise enough to
know your great, great, great grandparents names (and
you certainly should know these), then you are still
missing the names of about 5,000 generations of your
ancestors. You know nothing about them, yet you are the
direct DNA product of their existence. There is an old
Scottish saying that goes like this: “How can you know
where you are going if you don’t know from whence you
came?”. If you tire of feeling lost, then learn who you
are by learning who brought you here. Understand your
parents lives. Understand your grandparents lives. Look
at the world from their eyes. Go back, re-construct your
family history. Find love and compassion. You will be
astonished at what you fi nd. There are hardships there
that you could never manage to survive. Or could you?
There is love and caring in your own blood that has traveled
for a hundred thousand years. Try not to be short
sighted, look to the long view. What will truly matter in
10 years? 20 years? 1,000 years? What will your descendants
remember of you?
Become Found.

BEING BLIND
Seldom do we look beyond our immediate boundaries.
Most of us are lost in the self indulgent moment, trapped
in the “what’s in it for me” frame of mind. Narcissism
is the disease of our time. Recognize it. Grow beyond
it. I mentioned earlier about our ancestors looking to
the sky. When was the last time you gazed at the stars
in absolute wonder? Once a week (or every evening if
you can) watch the stars. Admire the planets. Bask in the
reflection of the moon. Think about who you are, who
you want to be, and how unique you are in this universe.
Think about how utterly small you are, and then think
about how tremendously important you are, and can be.
Gain a sense of perspective. Make a difference.
Look up to see.

So, here are my three simple rules:
- Get re-grounded with the earth.
- Become found in your own family.
- Look up to see the universe and your place in it.

Life is not cheap. It took the energy production of the
entire universe to produce intelligent life on this planet.
We will truely be “civilized” when we realize that life is
the most precious stuff in the universe. It’s time to quit
killing.
